Week 7 Recap

The first losing week, not totally unexpected since there was only one decent game on the schedule.  Of course I bungled that one too.
This week: 6-8 (42.9%)
Season: 56-43 (56.6%)
5 martini picks: 3-1 (75%)
4 martini picks: 3-2 (60%)
3 martini picks: 6-2 (75%)

The “Merrill Hoge is a Spin Button” pick ‘em play of the week: Tampa Bay Buccaneers = WIN

3 martinis
Denver at New England (-3) - LOSS - I said the New England running game would dominate until Jay Cutler threw a few TDs and forced Cassell to get involved.  I’m still waiting…

2 martinis
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati (+9.5) - LOSS - Steelers tune up with a home game in Cincinnati before an actual home game against the Giants.

Minnesota at Chicago (-3) - WIN - Raise your hand if you thought this was going to be a shootout.

Indianapolis at Green Bay (+1) - LOSS - The Colts are going to be tough to handicap.  Very frustrating to see them lay an egg after last week’s blowout over Baltimore.

1 martini
Tennessee at Kansas City (+9) - WIN - The biggest winner in this game was LenDale White.  80 yard TD run, are you kidding me?

Detroit at Houston (-9.5) - WIN - The Lions are bad, but it will be a long time before the Texans can support a 9.5 point spread.

Seattle at Tampa Bay (-10.5) - LOSS -  A garbage time TD cost us this one, which surprised me because the Bucs were in total control from start to finish.  I was switching between this game and the other Tampa Bay game going on at the same time - the ALCS game seven against the Red Sox.  You know what strikes me about Rays fans?  They all have brand new jerseys on, and since the home team color is white it looks like a laundry detergent commercial out there - see how white you can get this jersey!

New Orleans at Carolina (-3) - LOSS - I have no idea if the Panthers are good or not.  I’m pretty sure the Saints aren’t good, at least on defense.  For all the love Drew Brees gets, he sure does come up small in a lot of games.

Cleveland at Washington (-7.5) - LOSS - Apparently the Redskins need to go on the road to play well.  How can Clinton Portis run for almost 200 yards and this game still be close?

Baltimore at Miami (-3) - WIN - Let’s just all remember that the Dolphins are still a year or two away.  Thanks.

Dallas at St. Louis (+7) - LOSS - Woof.  This thing in Dallas is falling apart and T.O. has raised his threat level from “crazy” to “arrogantly insane”.

New York Jets at Oakland (+3) - WIN - Another week, another head coach that shoots himself in the foot with the dumb “timeout right before the game altering field goal”.  And yet again it didn’t stop the Raiders from winning in overtime.  But please can we put this “strategy” to bed?

Rotgut

San Diego at Buffalo (-1) - WIN - I told you the Chargers didn’t have it in them to fly across the country and compete.  Their defense has real problems - without Merriman around to harass the opposing QB, teams are just standing there and picking apart the weak San Diego secondary.

San Francisco at New York Giants (-10.5) - LOSS - Interesting ending to the game - Josh Morgan kicked a fumble out of bounds resulting in a safety, which did not impact the final score but did push the Giants past the spread.  Anyone with money on this game (and if you have been reading me, that means you were not involved) got pretty emotional when that happened.
